Step 1: Check Your Printer Model

Look at your printer's model number — it's usually printed on a label on the bottom or back. Most thermal receipt printers use 3 1/8" wide paper. If you have a credit card terminal or handheld device, it likely uses 2 1/4" paper. Check our printer compatibility guide for specific models.

Step 2: Choose Your Paper Length

Thermal rolls come in different lengths — measured in feet. Longer rolls (230') mean fewer change-outs. For high-volume restaurants and retail, 230' rolls are the standard. Budget rolls (80-150') cost less per roll but you'll change them 2-3x more often — the labor cost of changing rolls often exceeds the paper savings.

Step 3: BPA-Free or Standard?

Standard thermal paper contains BPA (bisphenol A) as a color developer. BPA-free thermal paper uses phenol-free alternatives. If your business is health-focused (pharmacy, gym, organic grocery, dispensary) or if customers frequently handle receipts, BPA-free is worth the small premium.
