Ordering the wrong receipt paper size is the most common POS supply mistake โ and the most frustrating. This guide explains every common thermal paper dimension, which printers use each size, and how to measure your existing rolls so you never order wrong again.
All common receipt paper sizes available with fast shipping
The standard size for most POS printers. 80mm width, 230-foot length. Fits Epson, Star, and most countertop printers.
View DetailsNarrow width for credit card terminals and compact printers. 57mm width, 74-foot length. Fits Square, Clover, Verifone.
View Details3" wide bond paper for Epson impact printers. Not thermal โ uses ribbon cartridges. Different technology, different size.
View Details3 1/8" x 230' BPA-free thermal paper. Same dimensions as our standard rolls with eco-conscious chemistry.
View DetailsReceipt paper is measured by width (the distance across the roll) and length (how much paper is wound onto the roll). Width determines whether the paper fits your printer โ it's non-negotiable. Length determines how long a roll lasts before needing replacement. Getting the width right is critical; the length is a matter of convenience and cost.
| Width | Metric | Common Lengths | Used By | PSD SKU |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 2 1/4" | 57mm | 50', 74', 85' | Credit card terminals, Square Terminal, Clover, handheld POS, gas pump readers | 15-741 |
| 3" | 76mm | 90', 165', 230' | Epson impact printers (bond paper), some legacy registers, kitchen printers | 13-305 (bond) |
| 3 1/8" | 80mm | 165', 230', 275' | Most POS thermal printers: Epson TM-T88, Star TSP100, Bixolon, POS-X, NCR | 54-230, PF-230 |
This is the narrowest common POS paper size. You'll find it in standalone credit card terminals (Verifone, Ingenico), tablet-based POS printers (Square, Clover, Toast handheld), gas pump receipt printers, and some mobile POS devices. It's also the standard size for ATM receipt printers. Our SKU 15-741 is 2 1/4" x 74' โ a 74-foot length that provides roughly 250-350 receipts per roll depending on receipt length. If your printer produces short receipts (card terminal), 74' is efficient. If it prints longer receipts, consider higher-footage options.
This is the most common receipt paper width in the world. If you walk into any retail store, restaurant, grocery store, or hotel and look at the receipt printer, there's roughly an 80% chance it uses 3 1/8" paper. Our SKU 54-230 thermal rolls are 3 1/8" x 230' โ the 230-foot length is the sweet spot between changing rolls too often and the roll being too thick to fit the printer. A single 230' roll typically prints 400-600 receipts depending on length. For retailers prioritizing eco-friendly options, the PF-230 phenol-free paper offers the same dimensions with BPA/BPS-free chemistry.
The 3" width is primarily used for bond paper โ non-thermal paper designed for impact (dot-matrix) printers. These are the printers that use ribbon cartridges and physically strike the paper to create text. You'll find 3" bond paper in Epson TM-U220 and similar impact receipt printers, often in restaurant kitchens, automotive service counters, and businesses that need duplicate (carbonless) receipts. Our SKU 13-305 is 3" x 165' 1-ply bond paper compatible with Epson impact printers. For multi-part carbonless paper, see SKU CC-235. Important: 3" bond paper and 3 1/8" thermal paper are NOT interchangeable โ they're different technologies used by different printer types.
If you're unsure what size you need, measure a roll you're currently using. Measure the width from edge to edge across the flat face of the roll (not the diameter of the circle). If it measures approximately 2 1/4", you need 57mm paper. If it measures approximately 3 1/8", you need 80mm. If it's exactly 3", you likely have bond paper for an impact printer โ check whether it has a shiny (thermal) or matte (bond) surface to confirm.
In addition to width and length, the core โ the cardboard tube in the center โ must fit your printer's spindle. Standard core sizes for POS thermal paper are 7/16" (11mm), 1/2" (12mm), and 5/8" (16mm). Most modern POS printers use the 7/16" core. Our thermal paper rolls use the industry-standard 7/16" core that fits virtually all modern POS printers. If your printer requires a different core size, contact us at (888) 881-6834.
