Impact printer ribbons aren't universal. Epson, Star, and other brands each use specific cartridge types. Get the wrong one and it won't fit โ or worse, it fits but prints garbage. Here's the definitive compatibility guide.

If you have a standard kitchen impact printer โ Epson TM-U220, Star SP200, or similar โ you almost certainly need the ERC 30/34/38 ribbon (SKU 62245). This is the single most common POS printer ribbon in North American restaurants. It prints in black, fits dozens of printer models, and produces crisp, dark impressions that survive grease, heat, and humidity.
Ribbons are only for impact printers โ those old-school printers that physically strike paper through an ink ribbon. If your printer uses thermal paper (smooth, heat-sensitive rolls), it doesn't use ribbons at all โ you just need the right thermal paper. If you're not sure which type you have, check our thermal vs bond paper guide.
Replace ribbons when prints become faint or patchy โ usually every 2-4 million characters, which translates to roughly 2-4 weeks in a busy kitchen. Don't wait until prints are illegible โ by then you've been sending hard-to-read tickets to the kitchen for days. Keep a spare ribbon on hand and change it on schedule, not when it fails.
